Remembering Bend, Oregon
3-26-08

I just finished the edit on “The making of The Grilled Cheese Album” and that made me think back to the great weekend we had down in Bend, Oregon. Adam grew up in Bend and recorded his first album there. So when it came time to record Grilled Cheese there was no other option. Adam flew down from Seattle to Studio 7 (a studio owned by his high school track couch) to spend 5 days writing, recording and catching up with old friends and relatives and, of course, Nels and I had to drive down to film it all. After many near-death experiences driving over the pass, we were greeted by a houseful of people that were pretty much half our age. Jake, his step-sister Chantelle, and their friend Suge (not sure how to spell but like sugar without the ar.) were kind enough to let Nels and I stay in their house and we got to pretend we were back in college for a couple days. Sleeping on the floor alone,  as opposed to my king size bed surrounded by wife, dogs and baby, took some getting used to but I was excited to be apart of the project and was looking forward to getting into the studio.

Studio 7  www.studiosevenmusic.com  is out on a farm in Tumalo, Oregon and was the perfect atmosphere to record a childrens album. It was attached to Dave’s house so there was his kid’s stuff everywhere…skateboards, wagons, basketball, etc. Ideal. From the studio windows you could see amazing mountains (I never know the names of mountains) and we lucked out with clear skies and sunny days. We tried to film everything without getting in the way and I even got to play guitar on a few tracks that I wrote. It was an amazing experience to hear a song that I wrote late at night in my basement come to life in a studio with Austin Early’s drums behind it and Adam’s great voice singing my lyrics. I am a big fan of Adam’s music so it was great to see the behind the scenes of all his songs and to picture how they will sound as the soundtrack to Chef and Father and what a great album it is going to be. Dave and his studio engineer Marc are hard at work mastering it and adding bass tracks etc... So we are all back in Seattle eagerly anticipating the final product…

            Life happens at the table.
